OS version: Android 7.0 Nougat with HiOS 2.0; Price: Check here; Tecno Phantom 8. The primary camera on the Phantom 8 is a dual-camera set up with Sony-made IMX386 12 MP and 13 MP sensors. Released at the latter part of 2017, this phone is what can be referred to as TECNO’s flagship for the period. However, very soon I will probably be getting the Tecno F7. My sony ericsson Xperia X10 costs around NGN30,000 though I got the london used for NGN21,000, it can only run on android 2.3.3 OS and a Tecno N3 which runs on Android 4.0 would cost around NGN14,000 for a brand new phone. Imagine the price difference and specification. Tecno Pop 3 Plus is the latest entry-level smartphone from the Tecno which has a decent spec sheet. The new smartphone comes with a huge 6.52-inch display with a notch, a Mediatek Helio A22 SoC on the inside, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a massive 4,000mAh battery which is where the “Plus” in its name comes from.

Mobile Phone Prices In Nigeria (December 2020) – The introduction of mobile phones into the Nigerian ecosystem is easily one of the most beneficial moves that a Nigerian government has taken.
This is due to the fact that there has been no other technology that has benefited a majority of the Nigerian people quite as much as the mobile phone.
Mobile Phone Prices In Nigeria
The fact that mobile phones are generally easy to use has helped in no little way to make sure that it is embraced by people from all walks of life. It is not out of place to see the poor, rich, literate and illiterate people all using mobile phones.
In early years of telephony in Nigeria, telephones from the only Telco at the time NITEL will cost you a fortune to procure and will even cost you more to maintain the telephone bills every month.
With a little more development in the telephony ecosystem came the first era of mobile phones. These phones at the time were majorly analog cellular phones that only gave you the voice communication capabilities.
At the time, due to the expensive cost of acquiring mobile phones, many Nigerians did not know about the existence of mobile phones as only the extremely rich could afford to buy one.
The use of wired NITEL phones was the order of the day and even at that many people could not afford as only the middle class and upper class could afford to procure and maintain the landlines.
When the current generation of mobile phones was introduced to Nigeria, it did well because commercial availability was achieved very quickly.
Another factor that helped the penetration of mobile phones in Nigeria was that the teeming young population of Nigeria caught the mobile phone fever with many young people going as far as using their school fees and savings to acquire mobile phones.
Now, mobile phones are no longer a luxury that could only be afforded by the wealthy. Rather it is fast become a necessity used by young children from as young an age as 8.
During the first generation of mobile telephony in Nigeria, Nigerians were limited to the usage of the fixed-phone system of communication.
As a result of that, it was very common to see overcrowded phone booths filled with people waiting their turn to make an important call.
This phenomenon was majorly due to the fact that NITEL-owned landlines were extremely expensive and could only be afforded by the wealthy as we already espoused. At the time, innovative public phone booths unit cards were popular because of its affordability.
So while the remaining parts of Africa and indeed the world at large had moved into a new generation of mobile telephony, Nigeria was still held back by the issues we had enlisted above.
The introduction of the new personal communication system started a new era tagged the second generation. The second generation of mobile phones offered more options in terms of what mobile phone owners could do with their phones.
The phones added both SMS communications and of course retained the voice capability of the former generation of mobile phones. Many countries in Africa took advantage of the new technology but it took Nigeria a while to come to the table.
First Original Equipment Manufacturers that Penetrated the Nigerian Market
The first phones to enter the Nigerian market were brand phones of Motorola, Alcaltel, Sony Ericson, NEC, Siemens, Bird and tens of other products.
After the first wave of blue and white screen phones came industry giant Nokia followed by the first popular browsing phones in Nigeria; the Sagem My X series.
Then came the phones popularly referred to as “JAVA phones: in Nigeria. The JAVA phones generally came with browsing capabilities, had apps but were not enabled for multitasking.
Symbian phones closely followed the JAVA phones and took over the bigger percentage of the market share. The multitasking feature of the Symbian phones was what made the phones extremely popular among young people who wanted to game, browse the internet and text at the same time.
OEMs like Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericson took advantage of the Symbian OS to build products that took over the market. Nokia especially became the highest shareholders of the Symbian OS and permanently created phones on the platform until the introduction of Smartphones.
Blackberry: The Introduction of Smartphones to The Nigerian Market
Canadian OEM Research in Motion delved into emerging markets like Nigeria and indeed Africa at large just as the Blackberry mania was taking over other parts of the world.
With the highly priced devices coming with an exclusive messenger app called Blackberry Messenger (BBM) Research in Motion was able to cement Blackberry’s status as a premium brand.
Young people from all over Nigeria admired owners of Blackberries and looked to the device as a status symbol of being financially comfortable.
In its hay day, Blackberry owned the largest share of the smartphone market in Africa. In fact, they were the highest selling smartphone company by a very wide margin.
But the question still remains: how where they able to achieve so much success in an emerging market?
Being the first in any field has its own advantages and Blackberry took advantage of being the first smartphone company in Nigeria.
Blackberry entered the Nigerian mobile industry at the time when the highest phones being made were JAVA and Symbian phones.
OEMs like Samsung, Sony Ericson and Nokia were dominating the market but there was still a huge potential that was yet to be tapped.
Blackberry saw that Nigerians needed to go beyond calls and texts and use devices that were literally min computers in their hands. It was with this knowledge that the company started introducing its basic Blackberry models in the Nigerian market.
Research in Motion also discovered that most Nigerians were not yet in tune with touchpad phones so it decided to go with physical buttons in the market.
This led to an explosive success for the Blackberry brand in Nigeria and Research in Motion held down the Nigerian smartphone market down for years until the Android brands broke into the market in Nigeria and slowly but surely took over the market from Blackberry.
Android Phones: The Introduction of a Cheaper Alternative?
The introduction of the android-powered phones into the Nigerian market was nothing short of revolutionary. Like we already established; for a long time, the smartphone market was held down by Blackberry who were never going to surrender their market without a fight.
For a couple of years, the Google backed Android operating system was being developed by the Android Company. Google bought over the company in 2005 and with key partnerships with OEMs, the first commercial Android phone was released in 2008 at a time when the good fortune of RIM was coming to an end.
To compound Blackberry’s problems, the Nigerian market was seeing a huge influx of Android phones from Chinese OEMs. These OEMs provided Android-based phones that had better specifications, more options and came at even cheaper prices sometimes!
One of the biggest OEM in Nigeria today is Transsion Holdings. Transsion Holding is the maker of the popular smartphone brands; Tecno, itel and Infinix.
They are also the owners of smartphone accessories company Oraimo. However, today, we will be focusing on their line of smartphone brands and their cost in Nigeria.
Infinix Smart phone Prices in Nigeria

The company launched their first smartphone in 2011 but has grown steadily to become one of the most profitable smartphone makers in the whole world. In 2014, the company was ranked as the biggest market share owner when it comes to smartphones in China.
Armed with that huge power, Xiaomi went on to become the 4th biggest maker of smartphone in the whole world. They are the biggest smartphone brands in two of the world’s biggest smartphone markets; India and China.
They currently produce two brands of smartphones. The Redmi is a mid-range brand that is targeted at entry-level smartphone users while the parent Xiaomi brands are targeted at a more premium market.
Xiaomi is not the most popular brand in Nigeria. This is because the company is not yet officially in Nigeria. However, due to great reviews that Xiaomi phones have elsewhere, Nigerians have continued to patronize the brand.
Popularly known for its sleek designs, user friendly features and high-level specifications, Xiaomi is largely regarded as one of the best smartphone range in the world.
